Who could produce the music video- David Manning

We decided to match our genre of music, the company that produced us would have to be an independent label. We initially researched into 2 Tone Records and Domino Recording Company. This is what we found:

2 Tone Records
Established in1979 Jerry Dammers
Usually produces regge & ska music as well as some punk music

Domino Recording Company:
- Established in 1993 by Laurence Bell and Jacqui Rice
- Usually produces indie pop and rock music
- Based in London
- Domino has their first UK Number 1 album in October 2005 with Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have It So MuchBetter, and their first UK #1 single with Arctic Monkeys' I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor later that same month.

2 Tone Record's has not been as sucessful as Domino Records and does not produce music of our genre. Domino Records also appeals to our target audience already with the music they produce. This means Domino Records would be a better choice for our production.

Make up- Tom Ayling

In our music video we are not going to use make up on are lead singer because this does not match any of the codes and conventions we are looking for, also with the rest of the people featured in the music video are the two girl and we are not going to over compensate with the make just go very minimalistic and simple with make up.

Costuming- David Manning

This was on outfit we put together that represented the indie genre. The young man has messy, over grown hair. He is wearing a dark grey jacket and black skinny jeans. He is also wearing grey show boots. All clothing colours are dull. This look was influenced by the image of the kooks (click here) earlier in blog. Their woodland setting also inspired our choice of location.

This outfit was inspired by our own intepritation of the genre as well as other bands. Although indie men are usually dressed in duller colours we needed a more obvious outfit to make the band member noticeable from the brick work. We still chose quirky clothing that reflected our genre appropriately.

This outfit attempted to incorporate 'youth' into the music video. We used a slightly brighter coloured shirt but dulled it down with fashionable brown skinny jeans. We think this matches the style of The Foals, who originally sang the song Cassius. We chose a black guitar and strap and black base to try and 'dull down' the outfit. We think this worked successfully.

Narrative Thoery- Tom Ayling

The Spanish Sahara by the Foal’s
The Spanish Sahara was produced by trangressive records and was directed by longtime collaborator Dave Ma.
Here is a brief outline of the video. sound originally a chord sequence, yannis spent one night on it and wrote vocals no relevance to the real Spanish Sahara, it's a imaginary place, where something nightmarish and ravaged has happened, getting over a trauma and thetrauma doesn’t go away, it multiplies into a bunch of furies which is a Greek myth and the furies would haunt generations and families.
The video for this song is set in an ironic place considering the name of the song is about a Sahara which in most people heads will jump to Sahara desert. The setting for this video is somewhere in the polar ice cap. But in the lyrics of the song it is still speaking about how he brushes the sand out of his eyes.
The first lyrics and camera angle work together well because the lyric say I walk out of the mist and it starts off with a very bleak landscape. The shot they use is an establishing shot so the audience gets a feel for where the video is set. For the rest of this video the camera shots are mainly of the lead singer and of bits of landscape which could be turned into a story line. The lead singer acts as the male protagonist in relation to props theory because he is the lead and only actor in this video. The main camera shots that are used in this video are close ups, mid shots and tracking of shot to follow the lead singer while he is walking towards the camera pulling behind him what looks like a dead animal. The edits in this piece are all very slow even when there is an increase in the tempo there is still not a change in edit speed. This meant that there were lots of shots which lasted a long time. This shows that the record company is h heavily relying on the audience to recognize the lead singer and watch the video for the song not for dramatic fast passed edits.
All the lighting in this video is done by natural light although it has most probably been brightened while it has been in editing. So it can guarantee the audience gets high quality viewing experience and not having to squint to see what is going on, on screen.

Lyrics- Tom Ayling

Cassius is over!
Cassius away!
Cassius these daydreams, these daydreams ok!

Cassius an accident!
Cassius an accident!
Accident! Accident! Accident!

Cassius its over!
Cassius away!
Cassius these daydreams, these daydreams okay!

Lighthouse is an accident!
The lighthouse is an accident!
Accident! Accident! Accident!

Wish you’ve gonna, wish you’ve gone away, what you’ve gonna
What you’ve got has always gone away
Cassius! Cassius! at best, it’s all that we could do,
All that we could do

The wind is in, the wind is in my heart, the wind is in
Now what you’ve got has always gone away
Cassius! Cassius! at best, it’s all that we could do,
All that we could do

Cassius, it’s over! You’re second best!
Cassius, it’s over! You’re second best!
It’s over! You’re second best!
Second best! Second best! Second best!

Cassius its over!

Narrative theory to Cassias, and our own interruption- David Manning

"Cassius" is the second single from the album Antidotes by Foals. It is their fifth single in total to date, and peaked at number 26 on the UK singles chart, their highest charting song at present. It was released as a digital download on 18 February 2008 and on CD and vinyl on 10 March 2008.
The video was directed by Dave Ma and shows the band playing with hanging hearts and pills. This song was number 45 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008.
In a video interview with NME, lead singer Yannis Philippakis stated that the track was "the most straightforward song on the album. It's trying to deal with somebody being two-faced or, even to the extreme, someone having a split personality. The reason for why it's called Cassius - Cassius Clay who became Mohammad Ali, it's almost like there's two people in one and Cassius, the conspirator who instigated the assassination of Julius Caesar, who is a very literal symbol of being two faced".

However Tom and i both want to push the bounders and create a new theory. We have chosen to when we create out music video to focus on the male singer at the beginning, however towards the second half of the song, we are going to look at the Cassius being a name of one girl who is 2nd best and the lead singer doesn't want to be with her. Throughout the music video their will be signs of the new girl and him coming together. This should let us play with unique edits and become very creative.

Final song decision- Tom Ayling

For the music video we are going to produce we have decided to go with the song cassius by the foals this is because it matches the code’s and conventions of what we need to produce because it is an all male band which means we can use male actors. It’s a fast upbeat song which means we can use different edits and cuts but it also has enough diversity in the lyrics so we can put some interesting shots in and the meaning of the song has been posted by David.

The codes and convetions we are going to use are for example we are going to use close ups of the aritst and a to try and relate are video to the the lyrics. Have are lead singer lip syncing in time to the music.

Inspiration- David Manning

The Kooks
The Kooks are of great inspiration to us because they are a successful indie band signed to a major record label. They have had 4 members since their start in 2004. The are an all male band who are infamous for their unique fashion sense - this is something we want to explore within our music video.
Kook is a Yiddish surname meaning 'look'.

The Arctic Monkeys
The Arctic Monkeys are signed to Domino Records, an independent music label. They started in 2002 in Sheffield. They found fame at Glastonbury with a spontaneous sign along from the crowd. They are also an all male band. All four members are young, and were about our age (17) when they found fame. This means we can easily relate to them and this means they will influence a lot of our creative decision process during this project.

The Strokes
The Strokes are a rock band from America. They were founded in 1998 and have 5 members. They often have a very retro style and use iconic typography and symbolism. They are aimed at an older target audience however which might have influenced their retro style. They have won many awards such as a Brit Award for Best International Newcomer.

The Foals
The Foals are our greatest inspiration and influence. They are an indie rock group, again all male and very young. They started the band in 2007 when at university and all had previous band experience. They are often remembered for their weird and wacky cartoon images and unique clothing style. This is something we must consider when construction our coursework

All of the bands mentioned are all male indie groups

Email request- Tom Ayling

Dear Transgressive Records
Me and my group are currently studying A level media and our in are second year of studies and for are project we have to create a music video and we writing to ask for copyright.

The song we have chosen is Cassius by the Foals which is from the album Antidotes. The finished video will not be shown to large audiences. It will be shown to only be media group, the examiner and possibly people in our school but it would not be shown on a larger scale or put onto public viewing sites such as YouTube.

It would only be used for educational purposes and we would not try and sell it so we would not be using it to make money.

Yours Sincerely
Thomas Ayling and David Manning

Goodwin's six points by David Manning

Here are 6 key points that we need to consider when creating our music video. This will help are video to meet codes and conventions and alternately look professional.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Conventions of a boy band by Tom Ayling

The conventions of a boy band are the fact that they rarely have more than 5 members the one exception to this was backstreet boys who had 6 members. They also don’t play musical instruments in their performance. In the past record labels have been accused of fabricating boy bands that don’t have talent but look good. The type of music that boy bands normally produce music which falls in the following the genres pop, hip hop, or R&B. Boy bands have a target audience of teenage girls ages between 13 and 17 this means that there may very short lived in the charts due to the fact that that there target demographic grows up and becomes interested in different music.

Bands i would like to make a music video for and why- David Manning

Cassius by Foals, seems to meet the areas that we require the most.

Iconic music video 1 deconstructed- David Manning

The reason why i have chosen to analyse "Eminem-Star" is because it his rated one of the most best narrative based music videos of all time. This should give us an insight in how to portray a narrative within a music video.

The truly dramatic music video by “Eminem- star” is showing how over a period of 6 months one of his fans becomes addicted to him. The narrative explains how the pregnant girl friend reacts, the setting and with baby. The audience to this music video would be 14 to 20 years of age. However some parts would not be appropriate for the 14 to 16 year old demographic, such as going to the toilet is slightly personal observation and how they dealt with the swearing. Audience will feel sorry for Stan, however relating to him isn’t possible as the ideologies are completing different between Stan and the audience.

The genre of music is rap with r and b. We know this due to the lyrics and the way they are projected on the singers. The lyrics become digetic and non-digetic through out depending on eh story line.

The camera angles are mainly close ups either show the emotions or show important prop e.g. the letter. When Stan had committed suicide, the camera shoots turned and looked into the past with monochrome. This made it clear that he had died and that we are looking back in the past were some shorts have already been seen.
The camera tended to pan left and right to keep the enigma going, as it was hard for audience to keep following the story line.

The main acting cast weirdly all looked like Eminem. This was quite claver due to the fact Stan wanted to be Eminem and his girlfriend looked like him to.

The lighting throughout was minimum. This is showed as the mood of unhappiness and the scene that this was a cloud that would never be lifted.

The most expensive shot and interesting shots were in a wide range. The first being the pan down through the house which was very interesting and kept the storyline going, as if he was walking away for ever. This was shown again as only once she went down stairs and then got grabbed away. This showed them at different levels all the time and if she tried to help she would just pushed away.
The second was the crane short off the bridge, showing the car falling. This shows the distance off of the fall, adding tension and enigma to the audience.
The third was under water shoot showing his car under water and how this was the end this also brought the audience age up due to we are in the same environment.

The mise-en-scene was in America. We knew it was poor part of in America. We knew it was poor part of America due to the old car he drove, small run down house and poor dated lighting.

The ending was some what symbolic so the young boy was shown also dyeing his hair. So Stan had passed on his hair. So Stan had passed on his issues to a young child, very emotional to the audience.

The reputation of Eminem was that he had grown up and was able to construct a letter that was positive get telling Stan he needs help. This shows him in a good way get telling Stan to get some help. It was also interesting that it is if he wants to keep his fan. It was also interesting that Eminem tried to see his fans but get pulled back by his security. He also hugged Stan at a book signing. All showing side

Music Video Analysis, Lady Gaga- Bad Romance, by Tom Ayling

The music video ‘Bad Romance’ by Lady Gaga, was directed by François Lawrence and produced by Red One.
The genre of music is pop and dance. This music video has such a vast type of genre in fact it’s quite incredible to have three types of genre in one song, is this the future of music containing three different types of genre? It has been considered that the audience want more entertainment of their screen, as the normal is boring but the weirdest is the greatest.
The first characteristic that you can see throughout the video is dance. This has been shown with a wide range of solo and group dancing. Most of the dancing contains proactive flirty dancing. Lady Gaga stands out as the lead character in the dance routines due to the different type of clothing and the dancers have the same matching routine when Lady Gaga is soloing.
The meaning of the song ‘Bad Romance’ is very in the pop genre, due to the audience relating to this. The style of the video, setting, clothing and dance is revolutionary, unique in its form. However, the video is still of pop culture as its fashionable and fresh. This originality has caused a sensation amoungst the audience with a generation of gaga fans, or as she calls them affectionately, ‘Little Monsters’. The audience idealise her, they turn up to her sold out concerts knowing the dance routine the lyrics to her whole entire album.
(My laptops sound is broken and I can’t get onto YouTube in School, so I found this sound part very hard to do, hints why it is short, sorry)
There are strong links between the lyrics and the visuals throughout the video. The takes the format of a narrative in which the main protagonist, Lady Gaga, suffers for a ‘Bad Romance’. This makes the meaning of the song clear.
The relationship between the music and visuals are made throughout. The beat will create a follow up of an edit, apart from a dance routine, as they are showing off the routine.
The record company is trying to sell this track, with a lot of Lady Gaga USP. The video is a promotion of the song, its original style is a talking point, which means the people hear about the song, acting a free form of promotion. This encourages more people to watch it on YouTube, giving the more song hit, giving the more likelihood of people buying the song and video as YouTube has a direct link to iTunes.
The video has strong links between previous songs by Lady Gaga with the style of the setting, clothing and flirtatious dance routines, being very similar. For an example metal facial plates are used in all Lady Gaga’s solo videos. In bad romance she wears in once herself and the leading male with a gold facial skin mask. This all helps her create her grand and ideologies to her own fresh style.
We know Lady Gaga has very sexual motifs in every song she has song or danced to. We know this by the revealing clothing and seductive dancing, also in ‘Bad Romance’ she’s in a modern brofall which adds to this. So she has tried to keep the same image throughout her solo career. The camera focuses a lot on her naked back, which is a very sexual figure given out. The camera will also have close ups for her in cloths which are practically see threw latex, showing off her figure again. The whole point of this is that notoriously women buy pop music so this image is a way to trying to create a male audience, however this is also rebellious which will appeal to all of the younger audience.
There is only two other references to digital forms the first one being right at the beginning were a CD player is rewinding the song to come, as a statement of this is her after the song. Then the second is a use of a laptop this the increasing amount of money that Lady Gaga is when sold, this helps to show the modern technologies as they are bidding on the internet.
Lady Gaga hasn’t used any intertextual references, this is because she is trying to create her own identity like she’s on a whole different planet. Which actually would explain a lot of her dance moves, setting and clothing.
The music video is mainly narrative based due to her ‘Bad Romance is explained and then ended. There is though a high amount of performance that interlinks with the narrative. The concept isn’t very clear only that she has contained her brand ideologies throughout.
In conclusion we are witnessing a change in the current music video we know today!

What our music Video needs to have by Tom Ayling

For our music video we need to pick a song that is not to heavily based on the romance because we don’t have access to the female actresses. We would also like to use quite an upbeat song so that we can use lots of complex edits were as if we used a slow tempo song we wouldn’t be able to show as many edits. We also need to have a song sung by males so we can show that we are lip syncing which has be shown by David in an earlier blog.

Lip Synchronizing By David Manning

Lip sync is a technical term for matching lip movements with voice and can refer to any of a number of different techniques and processes.
Music tracks are recorded separately during the creation of a music video, artists usually lip-sync to their songs and often imitate playing musical instruments as well. Artists also sometimes move their lips at a faster speed from the track, to create videos with a slow-motion effect in the final clip, which is widely considered to be complex to achieve. Similarly, some artists have been known to lip-sync backwards for music videos such that, when reversed, the singer is seen to sing forwards while time appears to move backwards for his or her surroundings.

The video has helped us learn the the pros and cons from playing the song through speakers and the actor lip synchronising.
  • It was clear that are actor didn't know the words to the song which was a massive floor as it was then clear he wasn't singing. So it clear that the actor needs to know the lyrics.
  • The actor did look like he was male to sing this song though, because if we had him trying to sing a heavy rock song he wouldn't fit the role.
  • The actor was also cringed singing and spent a lot of time laughing, smiling or going red in the face from the cringe. So the actor cant get cringed because we will loss all emotions and feelings that we are trying to create.
We have decided through this exercise that we are going have the song played through speakers so the actor can lip synchronise to it. Then when it comes to editing we can aline the music video to the appropriate lyrical area then delete the clips sound and have the original song played.

Music Icon Analysis by David Manning

Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone on August 16, 1958, is an American recording artist, actress and entrepreneur. Born in Bay City, Michigan, she moved to New York City in 1977 to pursue a career in modern dance. After performing in the music groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she released her debut album in 1983. She followed it with a series of albums in which she found immense popularity by pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in mainstream popular music and imagery in her music videos, which became a fixture on MTV.

Throughout her career, many of her songs have hit number one on the record charts, including:
- Like a Virgin
- Papa Don't Preach
- Like a Prayer
- Vogue
- Frozen
- Music
- Hung Up
- 4 Minutes

Madonna is best known in genre in music is dance, rock and pop.
Madonna has been praised by critics for her diverse musical productions while at the same time serving as a lightning rod for religious controversy.

Her career was further enhanced by film appearances that began in 1979, despite mixed commentary. She won critical acclaim and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her role in Evita (1996), but has received harsh feedback for other film roles. Madonna's other ventures include being a fashion designer, children's book author, film director and producer, and owner of her own recording company Maverick corporation, as a joint venture with Time Warner. She has been acclaimed as a businesswoman, and in 2007, she signed an unprecedented US $120 million contract with Live Nation.

Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States, behind Barbra Streisand, with 64 million certified albums. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked Madonna at number two, behind only The Beatles, on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, making her the most successful solo artist in the history of the chart. She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same year. Considered to be one of the most influential figures in contemporary music, Madonna is known for continuously reinventing both her music and image, and for retaining a standard of autonomy within the recording industry. She is recognized as an inspiration among numerous music artists.

In the early years it seemed that she was out to make a statement trying to push the boundaries of society throughout the world. We know this as “In the Grove” released on the 23rd of June 1985. The video contains some very revealing shots of her body, for example she has several scenes of her rolling around in a sexual way. With the symbol of the bed already being sexual then her lying around in a skin tight black outfit, black tights and a black leather jacket, all gives a sex icon. When it was first released this in 1985 this video would have been extremely revealing due to the audience hasn’t seen this manor of sex symbol before. This video would have pushed and perhaps broken some of the boundaries of what the audience thinks is ok for the audience to watch and prod cast. From the outset it was clear that Madonna was trying to change the music industry in mainly this sexual way.

Four years later in 1989 she brought out “Express Yourself” this was one of her most famous videos throughout her career. The reason for this was due to her character being played by her but in a male gender. This was shown by her wearing a suit, dancing like she was proving she had male genitors and showing she had power by the camera pointing up with her looking down stroking a cat, these are all male characteristics. This could have been very controversial at the time due to almost making a statement that women had won their companies against sexism. Which again adds to the whole concept of her trying to push the boundaries of the audience. This whole breaking the rules has really been shown as one of her main motifs throughout all of her media texts.

Madonna has a perfect body this being slim, tall and flexible. This is well known by the record company so they have put in all her videos close ups and extreme close ups for her body, either with tight clothing or skin. This is adding to the sex appeal and over all selling points as it appeals to all the audience both female and male; which results in her having a bigger fan bass which should produce more sales.

In “Express Yourself” great enigma is created through this is done with the hairstyle, costume, props and settings...

The hairstyle is bleach blond and short; this meets the characteristics of a bimbo. This is further shown by her costume were for some duration of the video she isn’t wearing any cloths and the rest of the time she is dancing in a flirtatious manor, a good example of this is when she pulls part of her suit open showing part of her bra, this is a strong point being made that she wants to give the impression that she wants to show her body. The most interesting prop in “Express Yourself” has to be the dog chain around her neck I the bedroom, with the ellipsis o the owner of the factory, this gives the point that she feels looked in bed like she can’t escape. The setting of a hot steamy factory with the muscular man all working showing off their bodies. A combination all of this really does give out the perfect ideologies of a bimbo, which is conveyed in so many ways to give her this star image that she wants.

All Madonna’s videos contain digetic and non digetic singing. This enables her to dance, create a story line and still show off her vocal ability.

Most of Madonna videos contain a story line within; this is helped by the code. The two videos that i have looked at both show a good change of editing skill and interesting camera angles. However this wasn’t pushing the boundaries as the techniques used and the edits have all been done before, it’s clear that what was in the frame was more important rather than how the frame is being created.

Madonna is an icon and will always be an icon for the music industry and for artist. Madonna has created moral panic in the mass media in all of her music ventures. This will continue to create debate as she will keep pushing the boundaries.

Research into music genres- David Manning

A music genre is a categorical and typological construct that identifies musical sounds as belonging to a particular category and type of music that can be distinguished from other types of music. It is important we look at these so w can understand were we will fit into this and show us the range of ideologies within in all of these, so we can define ourselves.

History of music videos- Tom Ayling

The first ever video to be broadcast on MTV was Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles on the first of August the 1st 1981.

Over the the years there have been many controversial music videos but the first performer to truly challenge the representations gender was Madonna. One video that particle made critics sit up in there seats was justify my love because within the first couple shots it shows a woman wearing lingerie and, then after this it shows Madonna thrusting up against a unknown male.

The nearest modern day example would have to be Lady Gaga with her video for bad romance its all about a men buying woman and using them for sex. you can see more about this video in my deconstution of it later on the blog.

there are some videos that are meant to have a hard hitting story line behind them smashing pumpkins have done a video where they have had a woman who has been drug addicted with her boyfreinds and then gives birth ina puplic toilet.
